Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as a Modern Apprentice that,s exactly what you,ll do. Combine the hands-on experience of working with the qualifications you,ll gain by studying for the best of both worlds.

Modern Apprenticeships are an excellent way for your business to develop employees with the skills and experience you need. Modern Apprentices will get hands-on experience and on-the-job training, and at the same time gain respected qualifications.

Take on a young person aged 16-24 as an apprentice or develop existing staff by enrolling them onto the programme. Either way you'll receive financial assistance towards the cost of the training and assessment from the Learning and Skills Council.

Apprenticeships normally last between a minimum of one and three years and there are two levels: Foundation (FMA) and Advanced (AMA) at NVQ Levels 2 and 3 respectively. Both of them lead to:
National Vocational Qualifications - providing practical skills in specific occupational area;

Key Skills qualifications - transferable work-related skills like IT and communication, application of number, problem solving, teamwork and improving learning and performance;

Technical certificates - vocationally related qualifications that provide the underpinning knowledge of the NVQ.

Am I eligible for a Modern Apprenticeship?
There are no set entry requirements to do a Modern Apprenticeship. You just need to be living in England, aged 16­-24 and not taking part in full-time education.

Are there different types of Modern Apprenticeships?
There are two different levels:

Foundation Modern Apprenticeship (FMA)
As a Foundation Modern Apprentice, you,ll have a job and a wage, or be on a work placement with a weekly training allowance. An FMA takes at least 18 months to complete and leads to NVQ Level 2 and a Technical Certificate. The work is mainly practical: you will develop technical skills and gain valuable work experience. There is also the opportunity to progress to an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship.

Advanced Modern Apprenticeship (AMA)
As an Advanced Modern Apprentice, you,ll be in full-time employment with an appropriate wage, aiming for a technical, supervisory or junior management role. The training, which usually lasts at least 24 months, leads to NVQ Level 3 and a Technical Certificate. For many, an AMA is a stepping stone to university.

How long does a Modern Apprenticeship take?
Foundation Modern Apprenticeships usually take at least 18 months to complete, and Advanced Modern Apprenticeships last at least two years. The actual time they take depends on the Modern Apprenticeship you,re completing.

How do Modern Apprenticeships work?
Your employer pays your wages and gives you on-the-job training which allows you to achieve National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). You,ll spend time with a learning provider, gaining key skills that,ll be useful in the job market - like working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. In addition, you will also study for a Technical Certificate, which will give you further knowledge and understanding of your job.

How much do I get paid?
You,re guaranteed a basic wage or training allowance of at least £40 a week. But you could get more depending on your employer.

Do I get holidays?
You,ll get at least 1.5 days, paid holiday for every month of your training. On top of that you,ll get bank holidays.

What qualifications do I get when I,ve finished my Modern Apprenticeship?
You,ll get a package of qualifications when you finish your Modern Apprenticeship - a National Vocational Qualification, a Technical Certificate like a BTEC National Diploma or a City & Guilds Progression Award, and key skills qualifications. The FMA leads to an NVQ Level 2 and the AMA leads to an NVQ Level 3. The qualifications you gain as an advanced Modern Apprentice can help you to enter higher education.

How do NVQs relate to other qualifications?
There are five levels of NVQ:

Level 1 is equivalent to 5 GCSE's at grades D-G
Level 2 is equivalent to 5 GCSE's at grades A-C
Level 3 is equivalent to 2 A levels/1 vocational A level
Level 4/5 is equivalent to HNC, HND and degree level
