LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION

Careers in Fashion

A career within the fashion industry doesn't necessarily mean designing womenswear. Although this is one option for a student studying fashion design, there is a multitude of fashion-related disciplines which play a huge part in the day-to-day business of fashion.

When you read a fashion magazine, or shop on the high street what you see is the end product, created by a number of professionals working on various aspects of creation, production, presentation and promotion. This applies also to the beauty industry, where there are a number of career opportunities which are not immediately obvious to the prospective student.

Students looking to work in the fashion industry might consider careers in: menswear and womenswear design (for couture or high street labels), footwear and accessory design, bespoke tailoring, production or brand management, buying, forecasting, textiles, garment technology, styling, photography, public relations, advertising, marketing, journalism, web design, TV and radio research and merchandising amongst others!
Those interested in the beauty and cosmetics industry could secure positions in research, development, marketing, salon and spa management, beauty therapy, or as make up assistants within film, theatre, television and fashion shoots. For instance, studying Cosmetic Science at London College of Fashion would involve creating your own make up!

Other paths could lead students into the world of theatre and performing arts by studying costume, make up for the performing arts, television and film, as well as technical effects - including prosthetics and special effects.

London College of Fashion is the only specialist fashion educational institution in the UK, offering an unparalleled range of courses for students in all specialist areas related to working in the fashion industry. The College offers study opportunities at all levels from further education and professional development, to Foundation and Honours degrees, Masters level and postgraduate research. London College of Fashion is part of University of the Arts London, Europe's largest university dedicated to art, communication, design and related technologies.
For those overwhelmed by the choices available or who wish to build their portfolio an ideal option would be the Foundation Studies in Art and Design at London College of Fashion. This one year course introduces the required basics and then focuses on a specialist pathway such as Fashion Design, Footwear and Accessories, Textiles, Design and Manufacture, Theatre or Photography Styling and Make Up. Students who have completed this course would be ready to further their skills with a Foundation degree or Honours degree.
London College of Fashion offers a range of Foundation degrees. These highly vocational two year degree courses offer students a range of subjects and provide an ideal entry route into the industry. Alternatively students have the opportunity to enter onto the final year of an Honours Degree via a bridging program to advance their qualification further.
London College of Fashion offers full and part time degree courses that often involve working within the industry on a work placement. This provides an incomparable insight into the workings of the fashion and cosmetics industries.

To aid flexibility of study, the College offers two part time degree programmes, in Fashion Management and Fashion Studies. These are taught during evenings and weekends to help facilitate study for those who have other life commitments. London College of Fashion has also recently launched an innovative degree, FdA Fashion Marketing and Promotion Online, where students study completely online in a virtual learning environment.
